‘The Loughborough branch of
The Leicestershire and Rutland Family History Society
will be holding their next meeting on June 12 at their regular venue, the coffee lounge at Burleigh College, Loughborough.

This month’s talk is by Sally Henshaw and is entitled “Lady Jane Grey”. Sally is a well known Leicestershire historian who specialises in people and events from the 15th, 16th and 17th Centuries.

Lady Jane Grey was of course “The Nine Days Queen” whose family lived in Bradgate Park, so there is a lot of local interest.

Lots of us know her name and that she came from Bradgate, but the intrigue, subterfuge and power struggles that surrounded her being put forward as the next Monarch are perhaps not so familiar.

This talk will no doubt enlighten us all to mid 16th century politics and will show to what extent people went to grasp power. Corrupt politicians are not a modern invention.

Doors will open at 7pm for refreshments and the talk starts at 7.30pm.

We welcome guests to all our meetings, so if you are interested in researching your family tree, or just this subject, then why not come along to this talk and get some hints from our members. The Society’s bookstall will also be open for all to browse and buy family history books and CDs.

As a follow up to this talk, the group is hoping to arrange a guided tour of Bradgate Park and its ruins for the July meeting.

Members wanting to book for this should come along to the June talk to reserve their places.’

Report on walk held at Bradgate Park

The Loughborough Echo reports on a ‘Special walk at Bradgate’ that was to be held on Saturday 6 June.

‘A guided walk to see the ‘Veteran Trees of Bradgate’ will be held in the Bradgate Deer Park Sanctuary which is on the far side of the River Lin to the normal routes through the park.

The trees include ancient oak and sweet chestnut some perhaps over 500-years-old and there will the chance to stand on the line of the original 1240 boundary of the medieval deer park.

The area has changed little over the centuries and history associated with the site include the legend of the oaks being pollarded when Lady Jane Grey was beheaded.’

Tracy Borman’s new book

Tracy Borman’s forthcoming book ‘Elizabeth’s Women: The Hidden Story of the Virgin Queen’ is due to be published on September 24th 2009 by Jonathan Cape.

According to her website:

It will explore all of the most important women in Elizabeth’s life: from her bewitching mother, Anne Boleyn, to her dangerously obsessive sister, Mary Tudor, and from the rivals to her throne such as Mary, Queen of Scots and the sisters of Lady Jane Grey, to the ‘flouting wenches’ like Lettice Knollys who stole her closest male favourite. These were the women who shaped the Virgin Queen and it is through their eyes that the real Elizabeth, stripped of her carefully cultivated image, is revealed.
