Stephan Edwards

Dr J Stephan Edwards’ article identifying a possible painting of Lady Jane Grey, ‘A New Face for the Lady’, was published in ‘History Today’ in December 2005.

In October 2007, he gave a talk entitled, ‘A Queen of a New and Pretty Invention – Lady Jane Grey and the Loseley Manuscripts’ at the Surrey History Centre. In this he suggested that Lady Jane was not born in October 1537. His article, ‘On the Birthdate of Lady Jane Grey’ was published in the September 2007 issue of ‘Notes and Queries.’ A follow up article, ‘A Further Note on the Date of Birth of Lady Jane Grey’ was published in the June 2008 issue of ‘Notes and Queries.’

Over the last few years, Dr Edwards has been researching portraiture of Lady Jane Grey. In January 2015, his book ‘A Queen of a New Invention: Portraits of Lady Jane Grey Dudley, England’s ‘Nine Days Queen’ was published.

In November 2013, he posted on his website about his discovery of two letters written in London in July 1553 that mention Lady Jane Grey.

He wrote that, ‘To my knowledge, neither of these letters has ever been published in English, and no historian writing on the subject of Jane Grey or the succession dispute of 1553 has ever cited them. They are presented here for what I believe is the first time in the modern era.’ (Some Grey Matter)
